Godfrey Reggio is an acclaimed filmmaker, best known for his groundbreaking trilogy of films - "Koyaanisqatsi," "Powaqqatsi," and "Naqoyqatsi." These cinematic masterpieces, often described as "visual symphonies," artfully combined mesmerizing visuals with thought-provoking ideas, encouraging viewers to reflect deeply on the human condition and its interactions with the environment and technology. The Godfrey Reggio Foundation seeks to uphold this visionary approach to filmmaking, emphasizing the power of the moving image as a catalyst for social and cultural change.

OUR MISSION

The Godfrey Reggio Foundation preserves and advances the cinematic legacy of Godfrey Reggio by nurturing a new generation of observers, people dedicated to witness, question, and illuminate the hidden patterns of our world. As custodians of this vision, we bring Reggio’s work to life through live-score screenings with thePhilip Glass Ensemble, immersive archival installations, community programs, and interactive digital experiences. Through these educational initiatives for recognizing self-learning, we invite the public to look closely at the patterns within the systems we inhabit, to think critically about the synthetic environments that shape our lives, and to reclaim agency and humanity by strengthening an individual way of seeing, withincollaboration and the collective.

Our Vision

We envision a world of seers, individuals who look at the reality around them until those landscapes; background and foreground become known. Not just seen but felt as alive and collectively shared. Godfrey Reggio, a man of the people, sees amongst us.

Godfrey has spent over 50 years as a seer, witnessing the future-present to reveal what is in plain sight butobscured by familiarity. This practice of radical observation was born during his formative 14 years spent instudy, silence, fasting, and prayer as a monk with the Christian Brothers, a Catholic teaching order from the 17th century.

Reggio identifies as a heterodox thinker, someone capable of holding contradictory ideas simultaneously, which allows him to embrace the contradictions of contemporary life without looking away. He deliberately usesthe concept of beauty, visually diffusing harsh realities so that the audience is lightly touched and invited to observe outside of their patterns, rather than being overwhelmed by harsh realities.

The viewer is pulled out of total immersion, with space created for self-reflection and a choice to wrestle with conscience rather than automatic participation. Through a sustained unflinching perception—somethingchanges. The world becomes immanent and the viewer, an active participant.

The Foundation’s vision is to carry that practice forward, not as nostalgia, but as an ongoing and urgent formof inquiry. The future is not something ahead of us, it is being authored now in every moment of attention orinattention we bring to the world we share. We call this the future-present.
